YOKOHAMA, Japan - Officials of the city of Yamato, Kanagawa Prefecture, demonstrate a ''community money'' transaction Feb. 25, the same day the city began a trial run of the system. A full-scale launch of the system, using cards with built-in integrated circuits, is expected to start from April, with some 90,000 residents, about 40% of the city's population, likely to use it.

NEDO devises terminals that respond to body temperature

TOKYO, Japan - Photo released by New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Corp. (NEDO) on Feb. 20 shows a prototype information terminal that becomes activated by the touch of a human hand. The terminal adopts NEDO-devised large-scale integrated (LSI) circuits that require electric current of as low as 0.5 to 1 volt for operation, according the affiliate of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Matsushita Battery devises paper-thin coin battery

OSAKA, Japan - Matsushita Battery Industrial Co. has developed what it claims to be the world's thinnest coin-shaped lithium storage battery for use as a power source for thin card devices with integrated circuits (ICs) inside. The ''Paper Coin'' battery has a thickness of 0.4 millimeter (0.016 inch), thin enough to be mounted in IC cards with a thickness of 0.76 millimeter, designated as an international standard by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the company said in Osaka on Nov. 30.
